    Wider than the column loses rigidity. Mine goes to the bottom of the controller box. Relocating that was more work than benefit. Being steel my brace is 3x stiffer than aluminium versions.
    More bolts in the middle doesn't help either. The forces are coming from the brace, the bottom of the column (i.e. the main bolt) and the top of the brace. Tie those three points together and you're good. Beyond that you won't be able to measure the difference.

    I agree a steel channel would be better, why I used steel on mine in '07.
