Seeking Advice - Deep Bore Machining & Finishing

    Hi,

We are working on a cylinder that has a deep step bore (sketch attached).

Please take a look at the aketch and advice on the following:[*]Can this item be best made on a VMC or a Turning Center (we do not have a gun-drill)?[*]What is the process that you suggest we follow?[*]What are the tools that you recommend we use?[*]How can the specified surface finish of Ra 0.6 be achieved?

Any advice on the above will be highly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Prasad

You could drill & bore undersized then finish with a Mapal or Cogsdill reamer. That would provide good size control. These reamers also have pads on them that burnish the surface to a smooth finish.

Depends on how malleable the material is.

    Hello Dick,

    Thanks for your advice!

Will get in touch with Mapal/Cogsdill for their reamers

Just FYI - We tried drilling + bore lapping but didn't work. As for burnishing, we were told that the l/d ratio was too high for a regular burnishing tool
