I have a pretty large C3 Precision ground ballscrew (Z axis) that has some rust from the milling machine sitting in Extended storage. It appears to be above surface rust but below visible pitting/scaling
Is it salvageable? Anything I can dip it into to get some of it off (IE Toilet Bowl Cleaner, or Muriatic Acid, oil soaked 00 steel wool) without completely destroying it's accuracy?? I might be willing to replace it after the mill is completely operational but for now I am trying to get the best I can with what I have..
Its a real shame, It is 1.25" in diameter... Sounds Expensive...

Try car or boat polish and a rotating polisher for a drill. I've done it on linear guides and tables. If it doesn't take effect, try rubbing but be careful.

Rust Free and then T-9 by Boeshield http://www.boeshield.com/

Best stuff I ever used. Created by Boeing. Sears and I think WalMart carry it. Rust Free will clean it up and T-9 will keep the stuff away.
