    Using Kinect for 3D Scanning

I have no idea the best section to post this, but General CAD seemed best I guess:

I was looking at the following article (see below) and was reading about some folks using the Microsoft Kinect for the XBox 360 to do 3D scanning. (See last section of article about 90% of the way down the page).

Anyone have any details on how to use the Kinect as a standalone scanner? Any software out there that will create some kind of usable format that can be digested by a CAD program?

Obviously there are folks using the Kinect for this purpose, just wondering how they are getting data from the unit. I couldn't find any references to specific software. I'm hoping interest in this will grow as it seems to be a good alternative to software like DavidLaser, which seems to be good software IF you have a good setup. I have had mixed results with DavidLaser. Looking for a low cost scanner that will allow me to scan various objects for importing into a CAD program.

There is an open source effort that someone posted a couple days ago in this thread:

and I was lucky enough to be in to the Beta testing on this non-open source effort:

    ReconstructMe

There are other ones out there. I have no idea how to do the software behind it, apparently it isn't "too hard" if you know your way around SDK's, but that ain't me!

The new LEAP device as a Scanner, and other ideas...

What about using this product for scanning objects:
    https://live.leapmotion.com/
They claim to be 200x more accurate than the Kinect.
Not to mention it would be fun to use in CAD, CAM, etc...

How about using it within the machine to monitor the shape of the tool to verify it's not broken, or to monitor the shape of the part as it is being cut - While it is being cut! Or as a safety device, stopping the machine if it detects hands nearby to the cutter.

I spent about 4 hours playing with ReconstructMe, and the resolution of the Kinect is just not good enough.
I'm tempted to pre order the leap.

    what does it take?

what do you need to start scanning?

    1. I guess the kinect, of course.
    2. the software
    and ?

but what about the driver so the pc can recognize the kinect. Isn't it necessary?

is it just simple as plug in the kinect in a PC with the software?

    Thanks

Go to the ReconstructMe site linked above to get the software and drivers you need.

I tried the Reconstructme software and couldn't get it to work. But I had pretty good luck with Skanect: Skanect 3D Scanning Software By Occipital - The Easiest Way To 3D Scan With the Structure Sensor and Kinect-like Depth Sensors
