Steel with very good thermal conductivity

Can anyone suggest a material (Roundbar +- 80mm Dia.) which has a very good thermal conductivity. Mild Steel would be our next choice but it is prone to excessive corrosion. We have been using stainless steel but it takes a little too long to heat up.

The application is heated sealing rollers to seal plastic bags.

    Hi Weston,

We use 99% nickel for applications where we require high corrosion resistance and high thermal conductivity, 35mm dia would be the largest rod we use...nickel is a bit chewy to machine though...not cheap either

    regards,

Graphite maybe? Better thermal conductivity then aluminium and doesnt corrode.

Aluminum inside a stainless steel tube? Get better thermal contact between the two paiecs by using heatsink compound.

We used aluminum. Anodize wear surface after machining. If you do this, make sure aluminum alloy and anodizing process are compatible. This was used for horizontal and vertical form, fill & seal bagging machines sealing units.

If anodized aluminum is acceptable get it Hard Coat Anodized. This is possible on 6061 and gives a much thicker anodized layer. It is also possible to bond a Teflon coating to the hard coat, you just need to find an anodizing company that know what they are doing.

What about copper or a copper alloy?

Gold would be best... or platinum actualy (kidding)

I love deadlines- I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.
