    Boring Help

    Hello! My FRC team is attempting to boar 4 1.132" diameter holes in .13" thick 6061 aluminum on or PCNC 1100 to press fit bearings into. We could use some help figuring out feeds and speeds and if there is any way to automate a boring process using SprutCAM 7. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

    With the tools I have on hand for my 1100, I would circular interpolate to rough size the hole, then tool change and finish with a boring bar in a boring head.

    I would circle interpolate the 4 holes with a good, new endmill instead of boring them.
    If you're only going .130 deep, your TORMACH should have no problem holding .0005 tolerance for a bearing fit.

    We used to simply mill and ream. Works great and simple.

    Hi JD, We circle mill the bores with .005 excess then bore at 500 RPM and 1.0 IPM. Good luck in the competition.

    I could help you with SC7 if you choose to do one of the methods mentioned by the fellas above, don't see any thing in tools in SC7 for a boring op, but I just took a quick look.

    For FRC purposes I've always used a normal circle interp roughing/finishing process. With good tooling you shouldn't have much trouble getting a reasonable fit. Retaining the bearing in a slightly loose hole can be accomplished with high strength loctite or, my personal favorite, a bit of peening. A looser fit also greatly reduces the difficulty of getting the bearing pressed in correctly in thin material.
