    Upgrading ultmax II

I had to have the repair tech out today to work on my MD3. The reader head was slowly going bad, and causing it to drift up while running. Can't have too much of that.

Anyway. New reader head and everything is all better.

The tech said he could upgrade my Ultimax II to the last update, and that would give me the ability to do 3 axis milling.

Has anyone done this? Is it worth 800.00 ?

I have 3D milling on my Ultimax 3. Not a feature I use, though I have used it once and was thankful to have it. $800 would be better spent towards a CAM package IMO.
The problem with it from my experience is its good for a single surface, but if you need to put multiple surfaces together, it becomes increasingly difficult.
I suppose if you used it on a regular basis you can become proficient with it. I just bought BobCAM v25 for my 3D milling needs ($1175).

Is he upgrading the version or is he adding the 3D mold option? If he's adding 3D, I think it's a bit naughty as it'll be copied EPROMs so therefore, unless he's a Hurco employee, pirated. If it is pirated, that's a bit steep as all he'll be changing is two 27512 EPROMs on the memory board or worse still, just reprogramming yours.
I think they are about 7 clams a piece.

    Bloke, 67Cuda

I am planning to buy bobcad in a few weeks.

What I am trying to do is to thread mill a piece of 1 1/2 alum pipe into a 4 x 4 alum block.

Can I do this on the hurco using bob cad?

    Thread mill? Single point cutter?
Just helix mill it in conversational.

I don't remember seeing the helix mill. That is why I was wanting to upgrade the firmware. I thought I would need 3 axis cutting for that.

Where you select lines and arcs in milling, there is also a helical milling option. Your program will involve a Z move to depth, a move in X/Y to diameter and then the helical move CW/CCW on a radius with a lead to a final Z to finish.

Helical is with in the "lines and arc" block if I'm not mistaken.

Thread milling is essentially, line and arc block, a lead on arc, helical (make sure you use increments of 360 for each rotation, then an arc off.

I start at the bottom and go up. That should get you started.

    Bloke,67Cuda-

I found the helical part of the block. Do either of you have an example of how to fill in the blank? The project that I am working on, I need to thread a piece of 1.5 sched 40 alum pipe. It does not mater the thread pitch.

I was playing around earlier, and I did get the mill to move in all three axis at the same time. So that is a good start.

Try this in fresh air to get the feel of it.

Milling lines and arcs, segment 0 just start as you would if you were milling a line. Z start at 0, X&Y at 0, 0. Drill down to -10mm.
Segment 1 mill line out to diameter minus half the tool. So X 20, Y 0.
Segment 2 mill helix CCW, Z end 0. Lead 2.5, it should automatically calculate the number of degrees rotated to 1440.

Run that and tweak as desired for pitch, thread depth and diameter.

    Bloke

Thanks. Have a few questions. I have left the shop for today, but I can test everything tomorrow.

    What is the lead 2.5?

So for the number of threads I want I just add 360 degrees? I was trying to use 1 segment for the first 360 degrees, 2 segment for 361 to 720 and so on. I did not realize I could just add the number of rotations to the degrees

    Thanks for the help

I have the 3 D milling option and it's OK , but you can do the same thing with stock Hurco programing
by using "offset" blocks. I was somewhat disappointed when I got the 3D option.
Yes, it is easier to program, but the basic table moves/program options in Ultimax II can do the same thing.
Know this, it is still a 2 1/2 axis machine and will NOT do 3 non-linear axis moves at the same time ( called surfacing IMHO)
One axis will always be linear.
I love the helical milling function. Piece of cake for threading !

And yes, I always thread from bottom , going up. No crashes !

    Rich.

Thanks. I have been looking at the bobcad software and they have the 2.5 d and the true 3d packages.

If the hurco can't do 3d then there is no reason to buy the more expensive option
