    PM25MV Capabilites (Video)

There was talk in another thread about what these little brutes can do as far as DOC, Feed, etc..

Hoss had mentioned he was going to try a 3/8" rougher in steel .500 DOC.

I decided I wanted to try the same, just for fun.

Here is the video. Sorry for the crappy quality, it was done with my digital camera.

    865 RPM
    .500 DOC
    3/8" 4Flute HSS Chinese Rougher
    Full width of cut.
    1018 Mild Steel

The gears were louder then the actual cut. But other then that it cut like butter. I have no doubt the G0704 could do the same, even with the slightly smaller motor.

I hope this helps all the critics.

Wow. Were you climb milling that?

EDIT: Never mind. I see it was the full width

Hi. And thanks for the video.
My question about the mills was not whether the PM-25MV could mill steel. It was whether the 3/4 Hp PM-20MV could do it as well and whether or not it was worth the $160 more it was going to cost me to upgrade my order to a PM-25. It's moot now since I forked over the money today and upgraded to the PM-25. I don't regret it a bit, especially after seeing this video.
I mostly make video camera mounting brackets from aluminum, but if and when I have to do any steel, I know I don't have to worry about it.
In my ignorance, I wasn't sure and no one seemed to have a real life experience answer.
I'll be interested to see if Hoss makes a video and shows how the G0704 handles this kind of cut. If it does as well, maybe I wasted $160, but I'm still not going to be sorry.

That was pretty amazing. Before seeing that video I would not have tried that with the ZX45. But if you can do that with the PM25, I bought a much bigger mill than I really needed. I have a couple of roughing bits, but never used them for anything. I guess I will have to play with them now!

You could do this with a regular end mill as well. Its just less stress on everything to use a rougher. Hence the name.

I ran another test this evening in aluminum this time.

    No video sorry.

    But...

    3000 RPM
    .200 DOC
    about 25-30 IPM
    Carbide 3/8 3Flute TiAIN coated.

Again, like butter. I'm really impressed with this little machine.

Hehe... I was telling someone at work about the mill I got and they asked if it was "scary".

I replied "It's scary enough that even *I* wear safety glasses... "

Which, unfortunately isn't true.... but I'm getting better. I just bought some the other day, because I wear them more often if they are nice and clear.

I wear them all the time at work. I can't stand in front of a machine without them on. It just feels awkward. But at home things are a little different.

Please wear them at home as well, not preaching, I've just seen far too many accidents (even at home trimming the lawn).

    Thumbs up Video score

-1 for using a drill chuck.
-1 for not using cutting oil.
    -1 for no Safety glasses.

I admit it was a good example of the machine capabilities, but others will see this and try the same thing - bad habits and all - and when they change something ( like only cutting 50% of cutter dia ) and wounder why they have only part of there cutter left in the machine...

    Thanks for trying.

    I don't think that's a drill chuck.

    You better re-evaluate your score.

I'm not sure what kind of drill chuck you use but that is not by any means a drill chuck. +1

Cutting oil, I could have used it. Did I need it? No, I wasn't feeding fast enough for the cutter to even get warm. This is a matter of opinion so we break even. 0 points

You got me on the glasses though, no exceptions. -1 (nuts)

    1 + 0 - 1 = 0 points

    chill snoop frog!

If he used cutting oil it could vary the performance, making it not as useful a benchmark

I believe he was using novakon quick change tooling but feel free to correct me

so i would say hes still 2/3 so +1
