I am gonna go with belt. The large plate is to hold the L shaped bracket that will hold the belt using a belt clamp. The stepper will be stationary at the head of the machine. Ill use a drive shaft that will go to the other side of the cnc. The reason I am using the long aluminum plates on the side are to be able to lower the belt and drive shaft so thats its not in the way of the front of the machine and I can put a guard over the shaft.
I am at work now or Id post a photo of what I mean.
    Thanks for looking.

Joe, I kinda like the rack and pinion Idea. Would I have to gear the stepper down maby?

To get high resolution yes depends on what you want to do with the machine, but many shopbots and some mechmates, run a direct pinion gear on the rack. You would have to gear the belt drive system down as well. if not more, because the pulleys for belts are a bigger dia. than a pinion gear.

Oh, OK. I was under the impression that the large plate was for the Y axis. Personally, I look at these single sided belt-driven units and I often wonder how much sway there is in the gantry on the other end when the router is in position.

I will sit back and watch the movie...

There will be a belt on both sides. I just got the other plate cut on the mill tonight at work. There will be a drive shaft that goes through the front of the cnc. Here is a link to my Uncles CNC. Its gonna be like that but the shaft will be lower hence the side plates.

A few more pics. The photo with the broom handle and my hand will show you where the drive shaft for the belt will go.

Ok, I have got the z axis 50% complete. Now its time to choose the router so I can make the router plate (Holder) I also posted a question in the linear motion forum on help with the belt drive. Looking at my photos, What do you guys think is a good size belt and pulleys with gear ratios? Still lingering on this one. Anyone tried a chain drive for the x alone. The pulleys need to be 5/8 bore. I am just trying to figure out size. I think I will go with L timing belt.
    Thanks Steve

Slow go on this baby. With a full time job its hard to find time to work on it. Well the belt drive for the X is about done. This will be driven from both sides but only one side is done. ( I am 6" short of belt for the oither side )

    Steve,

I like how the machine is looking, its going to have a very clean finish. My belt system
looks really messy compared to yours.

Well I hooked up the X Stepper to the table tonight and rapid at 3000 ipm. :rainfro: I know I will never go that fast but wanted to see what it would do. I have the stepper pulleys at 30.1 ratio. running kevlar L belting. If I can figure how to post a video on youtube I will.
    Thanks for the compliment guys.

More pics. I installed a belt guard on the X axis which also serves as the cable carrier holder. Some pics of my Z axis. All I need to do now is find a router. Man they are high $$$. Ebay here I come.

I am gonna get the big head LOL. Thanks for the kind works.

Well its finnished. Got the Z hooked up this afternoon. I believe I am gonna go with a slightly larger pulley on the stepper on the z axis. I have a 15 tooth. I might order a 20 or 25. Not getting the speed from the z as the other 2 axes.
Man If I could only find a router id be all set. Bet I could do was tape a marker and let her rip.
    Here are some more photos.

I Really like how the belt drive works. I started to make the belt stationary and let the steppers move with the gantry but I seen too many flaws in it. IMO. I get great speed and torque with the setup I have. You can not hold the gantry. It will push you. These are only 305 oz/in steppers. I have a little bind in the z but thats not too hard to fix. I believe its in my home made AB nut.
    thanks for the compliments guys.
