Need tooling advice on pocket milling 316 Stainless

    Hey guys,

I need some advice on best recommended tooling for pocketing out 316 SS. Pockets would be about 1.2" dia x .400" deep. I was thinking some of these coolant thru indexable end mills. Let me know if they would work great. I can get in 5/8, 3/4 & 1". I was think either the 5/8 or 3/4".

SHARS 3/4" Coolant Thru Indexable End Mill Cutter APKT APMT 1003 NEW

    Thanks for the help.

    SGS Z Carb Variable Helix
    SGS36517 would work or
    SGS36866

A little better but harder to find are IMCO M924 series variable helix end mills.
    1/2" square corner 1" LOC - #67213
    1/2" 0.015R 1" LOC - #67214
    1/2" 0.030R 1" LOC - #67214

Finish pass with a IMCO M905 5 flute.

Follow the manufacturers speeds and feeds charts for these end mills and you will be removing stainless at a surprising rate.

    Hi Dan,

Thanks for taking the time to write that out. I will look up each of those part numbers and go from there. Appreciate your time.

    Have a nice day.

Take a look at gorilla mill . their variable flute mills are really good for tough materials , their Sasquatch series is absolutely wicked . Gorillas carbides are the hardest carbides that I've come across to date and it's really evident while grinding a flat . A few years back I set up a gear shop with them when they couldn't find mills that could stand up the the heat treats that they were milling , They were taking brutal sized cuts and were slotting 1" diameter 1.625 deep(open at the bottom) , the sasquatch purred thru it . . Their original tool life was 2-4 parts before the tool would snap , the sasquatch bumped it to 18-20 at double the feed rate before they'd pull the tool out to send for regrind . They aren't cheaply priced but the cost saving is in the longevity
