    Red face linear to rotary

OK here is the (my) issue... I think I am in the right area...
I have to go from linear (electric solenoid) to rotary.
Like a mechanical counter, move the lever/button (with solenoid) and the number wheel rotates.
I took apart a mechanical counter and it has a little part that looks like a section of a spanner wrench that engages matching cutouts on the counter wheel.
I like it, and could copy it, but I need something much more robust and less complicated as there are other attachments and springs involved with the lever that I would like to eliminate.
So, can I go straight from the linear motion of a solenoid to the activatation of a wheel?
Any and all assistance is appreciated, Thanks in advance.

Connect the solenoid to a gear-rack and fit a sprag-clutch (one way bearing) between the pinion and the shaft.

If you want to make it double acting, drive another sprag-clutch/gear from the rack via a reversing gear.

I would suggest a pawl mechanism - basically a linear part with a tooth form that engages the gear in one direction but rides up and over the gear in the other. Does this arrangement have to transmit any sort of power or work at any sort of speed?
