How to profile/contour and avoid areas?

I'm trying to cut out this profile and keep the cutter from attempting the slots in the rail. In other words I just want the top flat during the profile operation and cut the rails in another setup. I've tried the little bit I know to no avail. Any help is appreciated,

I would create a simple ruled surface covering those slots, drawn on a different level and add those to your drive surfaces and regenerate. should work fine. hope this helps

I'll give it a shot. I'd thought some containment boundry "thing" might work to keep the cutter to the other side of the rail but I haven't been successful with that.
