Help, can't get steppers to run !

I hope this is the right forum for this.

I'm using Mach3 and have this kit from Keling:

    http://www.kelinginc.net/ThreeXCNCPackage2.html

I've just hooked up one stepper to test before hooking up the other two. I've
watched the tutorials at artofcnc and done the driver test and set up
everything else per the tut's and I can't get the motor to turn.

Keling's wiring diagram didn't correspond to the motors they sent,
the wire colors were different. I believe I have them hooked up with
the first two coils in parralell and the same with the second set of
    coils.

Here's how I have them hooked up...

    blue and yellow to A+
    red and green to A-

    brown and orange to B+
    black and white to B-

All the power lights are on and the stepper eventually starts getting
slightly warm but never any rotation. The DRO runs fine but no
    rotation.

I need some advice please as I'm to the point where I don't know what
else to try. What am I missing

    Thanks for any help,

Those are NOT the 270 oz 4 wire motors from the kit. Keling has substituted something else. What is the KL number on the motors that you have hooked up?

    Hey, you're right.

    Keling sent me KL23H276-30-8B

And I went by this doc:

    Thanks

So they are wired correctly. Are the motors working now? If not: Are the motors locking up so you cannot turn them by hand?

I should have said that I had tried to turn them while all powered up and I can turn them by hand.

And no they are not working.

In Parts & Pins, under config menu, Do you have Sherline 1/2 pulse mode checked? And 25,000 Hertz?

I do have 25,000 hertz selected and Sherline unselected.

I did just flip the switches on the KL-4030 and when 5 or 6 is up, the stepper locks up so it can not be turned by hand.

Another thing that may be important is the KL-4030 is labled different from the wiring diagram. The different items are in red...

    ENA - > REST -
    ENA + > REST +
    DIR - > (Dir)CW-
    Dir + (+5V) > CW +
    PUL - > (Step)CP
    PUL + > CP +

I hooked it in the same locations as shown on the diagram though.

    Thanks for helping CR.

If the motors don't lock up, then it's a drive problem. If they do lock up, then look at Mach. Are the DRO's working? If they are, then it's probably a port and pin issue.

They do lock up with driver switches 5 or 6 up and I can hear a high frequency whine from the stepper.

The DRO's are working fine. It's almost as if there's nothing coming from the PPort. I've confirmed that the correct port is selected per the Mach3 tutorial.

How do I know I've got the right pins selected ? I've tried pins 2 and 3 and inverted them.

Maybe I need to try it on another computer, I'm setup on a compaq laptop running at 768mhz ??? I've got a PC running at 2.8ghz I can try that.

    What do you think ?

Do you have the pins assigned to port1, and not port 0?

Yes, I have port 1 in there. I'm pretty sure I see how you tell which pins, the step and direction on the BOB.

And I think that the laptop is communicating with the BOB as when I turn the power off to the BOB and driver and PS's Mach3 goes into e-stop and won't reset until I power back up.

This is starting to drive me a bit crazy. I tried it with Sherline selected and still the same.

EDIT: Could it be my DB25 cable ? I'm using a new 25 pin to 25 pin Parallel printer cable I use to program PIC microchips. This cable has a male going to the PC and female going to the BOB, I changed the 25 pin connector on the BOB from a female to a male so this cable would work. This cable is a straight thru cable not a null modem or 25 pin serial. (???)

Also, I'm finally getting some rotation but it's in the same direction regardless of pressing up or down keys. And the stepper started getting quite warm quickly. Oh, and only if I remove the jumper for input or output on the BOB will the stepper do anything.

    Thanks much,
    Steve

What BOB are you using? Have you another computer that isn't a laptop? Most laptops operate at 3.3 volts instead of the 5 volts needed. There are other issues with laptops also, and they are not generally recommended for CNC.

    I got it, finally !

    Hey CR,

I figured out what the problem was and it was 100% my fault. As I said before, the parallel cable I have is a male to PC and female to the BOB. The BOB had a female on it so I changed that to a male, plugged my cable in and didn't think any more about it.

But what that did was to actually reverse ALL the pins, pin 1 became pin 13 !

What a stupid thing I did, I know better, I guess I'm just so happy to finally have my mill and be getting into CNC'ing I completely overlooked it.

So anyway,I put the female connector back onto the BOB, I made an adapter that is male to male, plugged that into my BOB and then my parallel cable into the adapter and it's working ! It's great to see that motor turn from keyboard inputs.

Now I can finally move on to much more interesting parts of this.

Thank you all for your kind help and time,

    Steve
