    Glass scales with stepper motors

I im thinking of using glass linear scales with my router that uses stepper motors

Do I need to be worried about matching the resolution of my scale with my steps per mm of my stepper and ballscrew. By this I mean for every step of the motor relates to one pulse of the scale?

Just to clarify I am talking about closing the loop with Kflop, not adding a DRO to mach

    Hi Gav,

Use the InputGain0 setting to convert the encoder resolution to match uStep Resolution.

    Thanks Tk,

Is it possible to make use of quadrature encoders with just the Kflop or do you need the kanalog expansion board to make use of the quadrature feature?

    Cheers

    Hi Gav,

KFLOP has 8 single ended encoder inputs. Kanalog just converts differential signals to single ended and passes them through to KFLOP.

You can connect single ended signals directly to KFLOP. But of course single ended signals are more susceptible to noise.

There are also 3rd party modules to receive differential signals. Such as:

US Digital | Products » EA Incremental Encoder Adapter

So Single ended and Differential signals will give you the same resoultion as each other but differential signals will be more robust/less effected by noise?

With wiring more than 5-8 meters long, differential signaling is usually necessary.
You can't simply shield common mode noise, so differential signaling cancels the noise, at the source -- the wiring.
