    found a xyz origin position

hello guys I have a question I come from lathes to programming a milling machines I don’t have problem doing the program but I found a little problem ,set my wcs I have two difference opinion

1.- set my xy with a edge finder compensate the diameter for edge finder and touch the tool in the top of the part to set the length of the tool means
    Example

    X2.58
    Y3.0
    Z0

    2. - Another guy tell me touch "x" and "y" but and z need to bring to the top of part take a length of the current tool put the value in the screen and z measure and put some value in the screen

    Example
    X2.58
    Y3.0
Z-.500 (I dot remember the value but is not a zero)
He said this way is better because if you change the different stock just need to change the z origin and still can used a legit of the tool

Please some body explain better to me Felix Ortega
