Fanuc O T control ser numbers, what does it all mean?1997 era.

I purchased a Akira Seiki lathe, Fanuc O T, 1997 recently (model ASL-17), but it came without the Fanuc Manuals or any manuals for that matter. My question is this...does anyone know what the designations for fanuc manual/controller numbers mean, (O, Oi, ect) how they apply in that time period. How does Fanuc's controller numbering system work? It sure would be helpful. Also any links or places I get that info. The dealer was only able to give me the parameter pages ( Thank you very much but the rest of the manuals would have been better!) and passed me off to Fanuc. I'm guessing they will ask for the software & Rev number. I can live with the dollar hit for the manauls I just want to know I've got the right one.
I currently cannot power the machine up and check the control for the Fanuc rev number as the shop I have it in will not have 3 phase power to it for a month or two. I was trying to get the manuals now without looking.
BTW - I'm very G-Code savy with almost all other controls, milling and turning, ironically I just never worked for, or owned a Fanuc controlled machine before now... aaaand... what do you know...no manuals!!

You can purchase the manuals from Fanuc, for the series 0T of controllers you have A, B, C and D versions, all very similar but newer and with more options as the letter is bigger. Te " i " is the newest and it means integrated, this means that all the control is in a small box in the back of the screen. To get the Fanuc manuals you have to know the version of the controller (A,B,C or D), if you do not know it you can see the model of the master board and that way you will know what version it is. Fanuc can do this, or if you want, give me the number and I will gladly give you the version.

    Thank's

Thank you for the quick reply. What you said all makes sense. I image the Motherboard's serial number may even have the "alpha" after the numeric. Thanks again for the input and detail. One of the tech's I talked to said to get the "i" but this is not the model shown on the screen... it is just O .

Fanuc 0 Determination - from Memex

To determine which Fanuc 0 you have, I would suggest checking the masterboard number:

Fanuc 0-A Masterboards (max memory is 120 meters of 48k):
    A16B-1010-0150
    A16B-1010-0210
    A16B-1010-0240

Fanuc 0-B Masterboards (max memory is 320 meters or 128k)
    A16B-1010-0280 (or 0285)
    A16B-1010-0281 (or 0286
    A16B-1010-0288

Fanuc 0-C Masterboard (max is also 320 meters or 128k)
    A20B-2000-0170 (or 0179)
    A20B-2000-0180
    A20B-1002-0360
    A20B-1003-0750

Fanuc 0-D Masterboard (max is 320 meters again)
    A16B-2001-0120

Fanuc 0- iA (no info handy

Fanuc 0-iB Master Main CPU board
    A16B–3200–0490 0X06 0i–B (for PMC–SA1)
    A16B–3200–0491 1X06 0i–B (for PMC–SB7)
    A16B–3200–0495 1X07 0i Mate–B

Anyway, we do sell the upgrade kits for these Fanuc 0 CNCs + DNC + rechargeable battery replacements.
    Cheers,

    Thanks Tom...

The rep. finally called me shortly after I posted and said that I wanted a "C" ser. manual. So that zeros it down to the:
Fanuc 0-C Masterboard (max is also 320 meters or 128k)
    A20B-2000-0170 (or 0179)
    A20B-2000-0180
    A20B-1002-0360
    A20B-1003-0750
I'll check the Masterboard as you suggest to verify it is. I assume that when I power the machine up I can go to the parameters to see what options are on and available.
I understand that there will be some number (code) beside the option that will tell me it is: 1) Not available, 2) available and on. 3) Available and not on. Is this a correct assumption? And, how would I know which these number codes represent?
You mentioned upgrade kits. What is that upgrade and why would I might want one? Also, I have a CAD CAM system that I have used to DNC on my Fadal mill. Is there a reason to need an “add on” for the Fanuc beyond that?

    Thanks again for your comments,
    Steve
