    Eternal's X3 mill build.

Well i have been working on converting a X3 mill to cnc. Have been distracted a bit by my car being written off.... so decided to build a kit car using its engine skyline+lotus 7 style = . Been reading a fair bit but its got to a point where forum posts are going to be need for questions and advice!
I will be using the CNC Fusion x3 delux kit with Crevice Reamer G540 option. At the moment im just trying to get everything in place and installed so i can paint the stand. Once thats done i will be doing all the wiring really not looking forward to that as there is quite a bit to do.

    Parts i have so far!

Home made stand....... yeah maby i went a little too far.
    X3 (Axminster)
    G540
    2x Keling KL23H2100-35-4B 381 oz
    1x Keling KL34H295-43-8A 906 oz N34 motor for Z
    Keling KL-350-48 48V/7.3A PSU
3x limit switches (going to need 3 more i think) 2 per axis?
    Axminster Emergency Stop NVR Switch
    Axminster SIEG Coolant System
PC with a Intel Dothan 740 cpu on a asus mainboard. (Great at doing calculations and runs forever without crashing ect.) on Windows XP
Mico keyboard with mouse touch pad love that thing!

Anyhow thats the basic idea! Im sure i will have loads of questions ect over the next few weeks so any advice is welcome! Thanks!

Will be using the CNC Fusion X3 delux kit.

"Small-Mill Deluxe CNC kit PREMIUM BALLSCREWS.
This Kit includes all the hardware for a 3 axis conversion. Two NEMA23 motor mounts for the table, and a NEMA34 mount for the Z axis, lovejoy couplings, timing belt and pulleys on Z-axis, locknuts on the X-Y ballscrews, ANGULAR CONTACT thrust bearings for X-Y axis, PREMIUM ZERO BACKLASH BALLSCREWS, and metric cap screws & bolts. Nema23 motor mount for Z-axis is available. You do not need to modify your mill to install this kit. DELUXE BALLSCREWS HAVE A 5MM PITCH."

Hi Eternal. Welcome to the Zone!

Wow! the CR option goes international. I advise you to order the helical coupling option also from CNCFusion. With those, your backlash will be near zero.

Jeff Davis has put together a pretty good set of instructions for that kit. I hope you will find them helpful:

Very creative work on the stand! Good job so far!

Umm CR i dont suppose you happen to have a wiring diagram for the x3 with the g540? Also did you still use the manual speed knob or did you connect it to the pc somehow?
Sorry im a noob have searched a bit just wanted to check how other people have things setup. I have a Estop(allows two circuits to be used so will stop the psu and the mill) and a power switch(for PSU) to go in as well.

Well, there's the standard Gecko wiring diagram:
    http://geckodrive.com/upload/G540%20REV3%20MANUAL.pdf

CNC4pc has one for the X3 that translates to G540 VFD control:

    And there are THESE:

Great thanks a load. I might do the speed controller at a later date. Just to keep things simple i dont want to get over my head and never get it finished! I guess the best thing to do is make up my own diagram from scratch and upload it for you guys to see.

Is this drawn on the pc or is there a program that makes them?

Cable is 1 to 1 straight thru, no twists, should not be longer than 6 feet. As important as this cable is, and as little as it costs, You should buy a good ready-made one:

Great thanks. Im making my own as it only needs to be 40cm long any more and it will start to get in the way. I made one a while ago for home built car ect and worked well. Using top quality components to make it, spent £160 today on wire, connectors plugs, leads and loads of other stuff so should have alot of the main box wired over the next couple of days.

I have my x3 in the shop and will be soon ordering the CNCfusion kit as well.

What made you chose the electronics that you have? There are so many different options, I am dizzy trying to figure out what is the best for me.

I did read that but was unsure if that was up to date, seemed like the info was a little dated. Ill take a look at kellings website to see if they still sell all of the same stuff, or maybe ill just copy your setup.

Finshed painting the big box, so started getting all the wires and stuff mounted and tested before i turn the thing upside down to paint the underside. All looks good so far green light on the g540 with just the basics wired up.
Dont suppose anyone knows what resistors i need to install on the motors i have? Im not sure how to work them out.

That is certainly a beautiful stand! You will want to use 3.48K resistors on both 381 and 906 motors:

Fantastic! also been looking at wires for the motors today. Being in the UK makes things a pain in the bottom to get the same stuff you guys use.
Closest i can find is... think the top of the list at the bottom of the page.
    www.cable-world.co.uk Two-Pair IND Screened 22AWG Cable

Ouch just went to order from the UK digi-key and check this out " Subtotal £0.80...shipping £12.00" bugger that heh right time to find somewhere else

You really want to find the resistors locally if at all possible. There is almost nowhere to order them that it doesn't cost more to mail them than to buy them in such small amounts.

These work pretty good for the stepper connections to the Gecko - they have a built in pot that can be set for the exact resistance you need:

I could not put in the link for some reason (blocked?) - but if you search google for EZ_G540 it will be the 2nd link, bottom of the page. They look like this:
