Engraving drill points in CRS steel

Hi all, I have a piece of 1/4inch cold rolled steel plate that I want to engrave some drill points on. Basically I'm going to be engraving some feeler spots for my punch to grab on to before I run it under the drill press. I've done this before and took too deep of cuts. What depth should I engrave it at? I just want enough for my center punch to grab on to.

Oh and I'm useing a 1/2 v bit to do it.

I ended up trying .001, then I tried .002 and that did the trick. .0015 would have probably been best. Well I'm off to drill. I'll try and post some pictures of what I was doing later in case someone else down the road searches and wants to do the same thing.

Before I drilled, after, and mounted on my Z axis. The camera really makes it look like crap but it really did come out nicely. I'm very pleased.
