    WoodSpinner,

Here is a quick card stand I whipped up for your project in 1/4 inch plywood.

There are two base styles to choose from.

What site can you buy the plans for that train? My dad is 80 and turns 81 in March. I would really like to make it for him as he was an engineer for locomotives like that.

    Anyone?

    Thanks in advance,
    Jeff

    Hiya jeff,

Its a commissioned commercial file my company supplies to business users (its what I do for a day job) The complex train type models are designed to be laser cut in large numbers for retail use, feel free to drop me a direct mail if you do want a price list

    best wishes

Thanks for the answer Dave. I was hoping to make it myself as a gift for my dad. (no, I don't want to sell any. They look way too complex but I understand that your company makes them so of course they don't sell the plans) At 80 he appreciates it more when I make things rather than buy them. (What do you buy for the guy that has everything anyway?) I've made a few of the "flat" trains for the walls in his model railroad shop. This was the first time I saw a 3D train like this.

    Anyway, thanks for the offer.

Here's a flat one I did. Your dad may like it, it's an old timer like me.

P.S. File is to large to post, so just PM me with your email address and I'll send you the DXF.

Here is a contempory business card holder I knocked out using .125" material. It's designed to be laser cut. I haven't tested it yet but might get to it in the next day or so.

It should fit the 2 x 3.5 business cards.

    Recycling old CDs

Time to give something back. I've been cleaning out my basement, and throwing away old software. I was determined to re-use my old CD's in some form without just throwing them in the trash. Here's what I up with. This is the Pegasus that I found on this thread, pulling a cart. I cleaned it up and added a stand, then nested the parts into the shape of a CD. It takes 1 1/2 CD's to make the complete horse.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I used a 1mm end mill to cut out the parts.

    Enjoy,
    Dan

Out of curiosity what speeds & feeds do you use in the CD? Any coolant?

I've tried cutting things from CD's a couple of times and had problems with the plastic melting to the tool.

Nice job on Pegasus as well.

Thanks. I'm glad you like it.

I'm using an end mill from think & tinker. I don't use any coolant, and run 22,000 rpm and .5"/sec or 30"/min.

I've had a lot of plastics melt on me, but the CDs cut cleanly. I use double sided carpet tape to hold the cd to the spoil board.

    Dan
