Well, since I replaced both I'm not certain, but I read quite a few threads and posts from all around and everyone with the same or similar issues all pointed to the power supply. I believe my motors max voltage would have been approximately 60-70V.

Originally had a 24V PS and was thinking of buying a 36V. The KL-4030 max was 40V and the 5056 had a max of 50V. Upgrading the driver allowed me to up the PS to a 48V. If I had left the driver I would have only been able to use a 36. Hooked up the new driver and the 48 and the problem was fixed instantly.

Papp, as much as it hurts to say it, I probably could have just started with a g540 and spent less. I suppose I was impatient and didn't want to wait and save up more money. But for the second build I'm sure there won't be any doubt!

Overall I think my total investment is right around $1000.

One other thought, if anyone has opinions, I had this idea, rolling around in my head, that I could try attaching a plasma cutter to it. I know I'd need a torch height control and probably a shield for the X lead screw.

I know what you mean. I made my first CNC with an Arduino card and driver shield, then ponied up for a g540 and absolutely love it.

Just a quick update, I added some 1/4" inserts, 4" on centers, cut out a jig to match and some cam lever clamps. If anyone is interested in the dxf for the levers, just ask and I'll post it up, I'm on my phone right now.

Also for some reason, when I was tuning the motors in the bedroom, they would start stalling out around 280ipm. Just playing with it the other day and thought I'd play with those settings a little and wouldn't you know, my max ipm is waaaay faster! I got it up to over 600ipm with the acceleration up to 100! No stalling! I didn't want to push it any further for fear that it would crash or something, the table it's on is pretty wobbly and it was shaking and jerking like crazy! It would cover the entire travel in less than a second. Don't know why it's so fast now, but I won't complain.

Thanks papp, I'll try and get a video up soon, maybe write some code to make it travel around randomly at high speed!
