you could, but you need to be careful about generators and delicate electronics, as they are not the cleanest of electrical sources. Personally if i had to do that i would look to pick up a second hand computer UPS from ebay, as that should provide a nice clean output even if the generator doesnt. That said if running power lines properly from house to shed is a possiblility, that might be better in the long run.
It depends on the generator. If you have one that provides a filtered true sine wave it would be just the same as hooking to the grid - but few actually are.
I agree with daedalus, a cheap off line UPS would fix most potential issues.
The desktop lasers don't have very high power requirements so a cheap UPS designed for a PC would be just fine.
