    A 4-jaw or face plate?

What do you think would be more usefull
a 4 jaw indepent chuck or a face plate of same dia.?

I have a 4-jaw chuck and need a backing plate to mount it to a
hardinge spindle which doesn't seem to be easy to find, but have found
a faceplate for 200 or more on e-bay.

it seems to me a 4-jaw would be more versatile being the number one reason
comes to mind is having to fix the part to a plate might take away some
    working room for the tooling,,,,

I use the 4-jaw quite often, and I've never used the slotted face plate I have. I did have a job that was so awkward, that I bought a cheap faceplate to drill holes in it in odd places for an off-centre bolt-down.

4-jaw by far would be my choice between the two. I have a selection of 3, 4, and 6-jaws for my machines along with a 5C collet closer and a face plate. In my 20 years, I have ran across a wide variety of parts with workholding challenges. 4-jaw would definitely be a good starting point.

Which spindle nose type do you have (A, D, L, etc.)?

thanks for for the feedback, I figured I was heading in that direction.
I'll be patient and wait for a backplate.

Any other ideas for backplates besides e-bay

    Sorry for the delayed response.

I have an A1-5 spindle nose on my machine.

I think I have some contact information for a company I purchased lathe chuck components from a few years ago that had good prices. I'll see if I can track it down for you.
