3D artist looking for CNC info

Hello, first time posting. I'm an artist/hobbysist that is getting more into manufacturing my work. To date I have used only 3d printing technologies such as SLA and MJP to manufature. My parts are generally very detailed and the outputed .STL files approach 1million faces. The sufrace detail is often >1mm. The 3d printing process works great for part reproduction but offers little in material selection. Having the ability to replicate my models in wood seems like wishful thinking but I'm hoping to be taken to task on that. The pictures of the gungrip demostrate the type of model I want to mill.

If there is a product out there that can handle G-CODE and faithfully reproduce my work please let me know. Thanks for any help.

What are you asking for? A machine recommendation?

A couple things to be aware of. Small details require small tools to be able to cut them. Small tools tend to be very short, so you may run into issues with small, deep details. This can also lead to clearance issues with the actual collets.

Also, be aware that small tools and fine detail = many hours of cutting.

    That was nice to watch.
What's the cost for these machines.

I don't know exactly how much they cost.. Contact a (or a few) local CNC machine seller and they can help you with what you need.

If your pieces aren't too large, a small mill like the Taig is a good place to start. I'm an artist as well, and I got into this for many of the same reasons as you. While those large 5-axis routers are certainly cool, they cost a lot, and 5-axis software's not cheap either. But you can do quite a bit with a small CNC mill with a 4th axis attachment. The spindle speed is adequate for small cutters, and wood, bone, horn, plastics, etc. can be carved - even metals.

The detail in the pieces you show shouldn't be a problem, but you'll have difficulty reaching some areas like between the horns of that skull. But there are work-arounds, like carving it in two pieces then gluing them together.

Check out the video I posted below. It shows a really good example of what our machines at DMS are capable of. We also make smaller machines as well as machines 3-axis machines with a 4th-axis attachment. We also have another line, Freedom Machine Tool, that is much more cost efficient yet just as reliable for the your application. I also put a link to those machines below. If you would like a quote on either of these machines or would like to discuss more options please send me an email at [email protected]

I hope you find what you are looking for!
