1991 VF1 Servo Motor Ohm Check

    Hello,

Would like to Ohm out some DC brush motors on a 1991 VF1

Does anyone know the specs? or the Wattage the motors are rated at.

    Thanks

    Speed,

I recommend using a megger and checking the motor resistance leg to ground (disconnect from the amp first!). If it's under 1meg ohm then you have a problem.

    Thank you,

One problem to watch when using a high voltage megger (550v/1kv) is that the megger can induce tracking on carbon traces.
I tend to use a low voltage meter, or better still, if the motors have been in operation for some years, indicated by low brush length, I remove the end bell and clean them first.
Typically DC brushed should not be left for more than two brushes replacements before reconditioning, minimum.

    Al,

That is very interesting, but I have not had any problems in the field. Have you seen any problems associated with this?

    Thank you,

Yes I have personally seen it happen, a small illuminated trace occurs through the carbon track, it most likely was there before to some degree, but the Megger only aggravates the situation, and burns the insulation if persisted.
