    11X26 CNC Lathe conversion...why not?

Well I am starting this build log to document my conversion of a grizzly G9972Z 11X26 lathe, the lathe appears to be very similar to the G0602
just a bit longerClick image for larger version.

I already have a cnc SX3 that was utilized for this build
Most of the stock for this conversion I already had in the shop, so i wont really have a cost of materials as far as the stock goes

this is what it looks like after being stripped down and painted, I for one am not a big fan of grizzly green Click image for larger version.

Here is another pic of the monitor arm, its made from 1.5" S.S. square tube, and bullet hinges so it can be lifted of if need be. The wires all run down through the tube
When open it does not interfere with the belt access cover

I am using a C3 index pulse card from CNC4PC, and also will be using a pokeys for the simple control panel. I used a pokeys on the mill and it works great!

Here is a pic of a simple button console for the lathe,
I will be using a pokeys. I dont know if this one is going to stay yet, as I might build a more elaborate one later. Still need to put on some legend plates for some of the buttons

    Looking good JT ..

I like the control panel & color coordinated PC ..

I've got a 10X24 Logan lathe in storage I'm thinking about converting if I ever get my mill completed so I'll be watching with keen interest!

    Lots of pictures please ..

I'm one of those really ignorant ones so I'm sure any of you can answer this: how do the "pokeys" work? I understand it has digital inputs and outputs, but do you break off usb wires and run to each switch? how do you tell it which switch does what? computer controlled? is it just sending like "alt R" or whatever command would "jog x+" on the key board? I guys I'm procuring a digital set off programmable "relay" switches sending pre-programmed commands.

Here is a link to the PoKeys55 (56) now i guess
PoLabs - Affordable PC USB oscilloscopes, logic analyzers and USB interfaces

You wire all of your switches to the pokeys and then the pokeys plugs in to the computer via usb, it is a keyboard emulator, it has alot of functions besides digital/analogue inputs and outputs, but I will not be using much in the way of functionality of the pokeys
You then program what switches do what in the pokeys software that you can download from polabs

Two of the covers have rare earth magnets inserted into pockets
so the will be adjustable for homing and different tool limits

In post # 2 you mention:

"el cheapo 15 in lcd that I converted into a touchscreen"

Could you explain how did you do this conversion? I'm quite interested
    in doing something similar...

Nice work. Could you please post a picture of the CNC machine you are making these parts on.

Magnetic limits make sense on a lathe, as the limit changes with each chuck or faceplate.

The touchscreen is just an overlay resistive usb touchpanel that can be had on the "bay"
This is the one I used, but they can be had for cheaper
15 Inch 5 Wire Resistive Touch Screen Panel Kit USB | eBay

Very simple to set-up, and use, just fitting it behind the bezel can be a PIA though.
Some people use them over the bezel, and then backmount it in a case, or control panel
