im sure this is a repost... but check these vids by glacern machine tool..

    http://www.glacern.com/index.php?pag...course_mill_01

They all have one very serious safety flaw. Long sleeves and gloves. This is the worst combination you can have. If their machinist has full sleeve tattoos and they were embarrassed, they should have chosen another.

I think I'd probably agree about the sleeves, but those latex gloves look a lot weaker than skin to me - I can't see them staying intact long enough to pull fingers into the cutter...

What I learnt from that video was just how much nicer a 'proper' manual mill is than the cheap ones we put up with!

the machinist in the video is the head engineer at gmt..

digits: i know! i think they are selling that very manual mill for only $3,250 right now too. i would feel pretty bad loosing all of those nice components converting it to cnc

It's probably not a very popular thing to say in this forum but IMHO the best CNC mills don't start off life as manual ones. All I'd do to that nice manual mill is bolt on a DRO and X-axis powerfeed (because I'm lazy and that's a big table!)...

If I wanted a CNC from those videos, it'd be that lovely Mori Seiki VMC in the background - not sure how big a garage I'd need to house it though!

I really want to see a video of one of those facemills being made - that's got to be done on some fancy 4/5 axis beast!

GLacern seems to be VERY polished....

From the looks of their tooling, the responses from other tooling buyers, and the polish of their videos, they seem like a real class act. As for that large bedmill, YES PLEASE!! I will have two if possible.... One for manual and one for cnc.... nice looking machine.... where the hell did you see it for $3800? peace

That's not the nice one from the video though - that's a knee mill and the other one had a moving head and a massive column with a counterweight.

Gloves have a tendency to wrap around rotating materials, whether there's fingers in 'em or not. BAD, unsafe practice! Skin will just slice off, gloves will mangle/break things. Please reconsider.

I'm not advocating anyone wears gloves - clearly it's better not to!

yes i know... someone mentioned how that manual mill is so much nicer to the ones most of us are used to and i was saying that manual mill isn't that much... Thats a crazy mori though. thats crazy how it has 2 tables... seems like that would add a lot more $$ then it would save

That was me, I think! Do we know what manual mill they are using in that video - it's not the one on sale in that other thread?

I believe you are talking about the bedmill that looks like this TRAK.
That bedmill is like a VMC without the enclosure and electronics, much heavier duty than a kneemill.
Looks like they painted over all the tags on theirs so not to advertise.

Thanks Hoss - yes, it does look like a non-CNC'ed version of that TRAK bed-mill.

One thing I still don't really get, as I am really a geek rather than a machinist, is how you judge speeds and feeds when cranking the handles manually. The best I can manage is to set the RPM to something sensible for the cutter size and flute-count, and then just start cranking the handles, adjusting the feedrate quite literally by ear. Do people just get good at translating 300mm/min to a 'comfortable' hand-cranking rhythm?

Manual machining is all about feel and sound, I don't look at a chart and figure I need to be cranking the handle at a certain rpm.
You can FEEL the handle getting hard to turn if you push it too much and HEAR the squealing from chatter if you're going to slow.

And I can feel the hot chips on my skin if it's going well

Thanks hoss - that's was my hunch, but it's nice to hear it from someone who knows.

Glacern does plan to market a bed mill - I'm pretty sure it's the one used in the videos. Sol sent me pictures about six months ago, and it looked *really* nice, just like all their products.
