    Xylotex & HF Mill/Drill

I purchased the HF Mill/Drill machine and want to CNC it. I have been looking at the Xylotex driver with some motors from AutomationDirect. The motors are 276 oz-in rated at 2.8a. These were both recommended by folks here on the board.

I am concerned that the motors and drivers will not be large enough for the mill. Any feedback or thoughts would be appreciated.

More than enough, with a 5:1 gearing that's 1380 in/oz of holding torque.

Not much speed at 5:1 ratio
    Thanks

Do you recommend a bigger motor?

Good. Do you see the speed as an issue? I will be using aluminum making some motorcycle parts. All parts are custom and made to order.

    Thanks for the input.

Those tiny motors would have a hard time moving that table around, much less cutting with them.
Paul, just because you get that nice torque increase from using 5tpi screws, its not gonna make them suddenly super strong. If so, Im running 2000+oz-in on my mini mill.

You need about 400oz-in at the motors to push one of those around good.

-edit- xylotex boards wont power anything even close to the right size for your mill(the automationdirect.com 400oz-in motors could work, but top speed of 400rpm is rather slow, you would get like 200rpm out of them before its too much)

What do you recommend that is low cost? I can the motors off ebay fairly cheap. But what about drivers?

I would say grab those motors from ebay and get yoruself some gecko drives, run them at least 1:2 ratio, maybe 1:3

How about a 1980's error 1200 oz,80v motor? That should do the job. Can you have too big a motor?

I agree at a 1:5 maybe 1:6 ratio they would probably work check the
torque curve on the motor to find the RPM at wich they still produce
adequate power from that you can calculate what kind of speeds
you could get with those ratios.
I would guess about 15-20 IPM is about what you could expect.
Maybe O.K. for a patient hobby guy but definatly out of question
for any kind of commercial use.

Going with more powerful motors will require different and more
expensive drivers also figure to double your estimates.
    Good Luck

    Hi All,

I too have a HF 1.5 hp mill/drill. I found stepper motors at www.jameco.com that are advertised at 4.8vdc, 1.5amp, 8100 g-cm (around 400oz/in, I think). I also found drivers at www.durhamrobotics.com. Does anyone know anything about those drives? They are about $90 apiece. I just need an easy "electronics guide" for the perfect components for an easy retofit. Any suggestions?

Axel dog, thats aproximately 120oz-in. you would aproximately divide the number you get by convertng grams to ounce in half becuase its aproximately double the distance.

I would stick with regular drives like many here are using so you get something decent for sure.

    Thanks Jon,

I guess I'll have to recheck my math.

Would it be possible to run it 1:1 with a 200oz motor. And just slow your cutting speeds down?
