    Product Idea (Your input needed)

I am considering making and selling control boxes and or escutcheons.
The boxes would not have any components attached, it would be the job of the buyer to mount their desired components.
They would be made of a durable plastic. Poly Prop I guess. The same stuff they use in kids playgrounds.

Would you consider such a product?
How much would you think was a fair price? $50 - 100?
How could the box be improved?
Am I barking up the wrong tree?

    Control box for what?

Different people use different programs and different machines for doing a wide range of different things. I don't see how one empty box is going to work for everybody. Generally, if they already have a CNC machine, they can do all the cutouts they need, using a generic enclosure that's available for a lot less than you seem to want for yours. If you had a stand-alone pendant box that handled some of the more useful functions of say Mach3 (is that a Mach3 screen in your graphic?) with a MPG, and it cost under $200, then you'd have something people here might want.

Escutcheons? We don't need no stinking escutcheons!

Based on the picture you have there should be popular. Lots of folks would like an all-in-one box. It may be best to rustle up a few prototypes and see how they sell.

Benny - Also useful to have a parts list and approximate cost to populate the box.
LCDs are getting cheaper every day - but a ROM on full-up cost could make a difference. A cheap box, but costly to make useful might not fly - but if "reasonable" to have an all-in-one panel - hmmm interesting...
    Good Luck and, Jim

Thanks for the feedback up till now guys.
Here are 3 Profiles I am considering. I think the universal might be the first one that I prototype. Unless I hear a big call for another profile.

Sorry Jim, do you mean I make up the box with all the parts already assembled in it?

Naw - Benny - Just thinking of as bill of materials and "ballpark" costs to complete the job.
    Like:
    eBay LCD $150-$250 for 13in,
ebay flexible keyboard - 10 bucks,
    yada, yada

Just thinking of possible sources eg; Dick Smith, Alltronics, Oatley, eBay, etc and the range one could spend to build a functioning unit. But, it would be an eyeopener to potential customers to know the relatively low price the actual control box/housing represents and the utility offered by housing all the bits in a nice location!

Selling a stain on one's reputation?

Sounds like blackmail. Could be lucrative.
