Guys,
What speeds and feeds do you recommend for cutting a 5mm slot, 5mm deep in Titanium? I have a 4 flute roughing cutter.
I have turned one titanium part on a lathe, but I've never milled it.
Thanks in advance.

is your endmill hss or carbide? any coating?
My endmills are HSS without a coating. They might be Cobalt, I'll check on that.
Would a coating help for this application?
Would it be OK to take several cuts to reach the final depth? I know that titanium will work harden easily.
Thanks for your help.

There are four groups of Titanium and you didn't specify
which one you are machining.
There is unalloyed Titanium Example=Comercially PureTi-0.2Pd
Titanium alloys (Alpha groups) Example=Ti-8Mn,Ti-5Al-2.5Sn
Titanium alloys ( Alpha Beta groups ) Example=Ti-6Alv-4v,Ti-6Al-2Sn-
Titanium alloys ( Beta groups ) Example=Ti-3Al,Ti-13V, and 11Cr-3Al
The feeds and speeds are for the Beta groups the toughest
to machine if you want them for another group specify
which one you want.

This is for 3/16 m42 uncoated roughing endmill 4 flute
RPM=670
Feedrate=0.8

This is for 3/16 tin coated roughing endmill 4 flute
RPM=1020
Feedrate=1.2

This is for 3/16 TiCN coated roughing endmill 4 flute
RPM=1690
Feedrate=2.0

These feeds and speeds are for 1 diameter wide x
1 diameter deep. ( 3/16 wide x 3/16 deep
gsrmmeza, thank you!
The material is grade 2. I'm not sure of the exact alloy.
I've been told that grade 2 is easier to machine. The material isn't that critical for this application.
Thanks again!

For unalloyed titanium use the following:
3/16 uncoated m42 roughing endmill 4 flute
RPM=2040 Feedrate=2.4
3/16 TiN coated roughing endmill 4 flute
RPM=3060 Feedrate=3.7
3/16 TiCN coated roughing endmill 4 flute
RPM=4690 Feerate=5.6
*******************************
For Alpha groups use the following:
3/16 uncoated m42 roughing endmill 4 flute
RPM=1690 Feedrate=2.0
3/16 TiN coated roughing endmill 4 flute
RPM=2380 Feedrate=2.9
3/16 TiCN coated roughing endmill 4 flute
RPM=3730 Feerate=4.5
*******************************
For Alpha-Beta groups use the following:
3/16 uncoated m42 roughing endmill 4 flute
RPM=1020 Feedrate=1.2
3/16 TiN coated roughing endmill 4 flute
RPM=1570 Feedrate=1.9
3/16 TiCN coated roughing endmill 4 flute
RPM=2710 Feerate=3.3

I already gave you the Beta group feeds and
speeds. Grades 1-4 are considered to be pure
and unalloyed. You will need to do some cutting
to figure what works to your liking. Remember to
use new sharp cutters and plenty of coolant.
Gsrmmeza,
Thanks again! :cheers:
