I did a belt drive system:

It doesn't look like much but it works.

With only a hundred pound gantry I don't think you would need a 2in wide belt if your driving it on both sides of the gantry. check out the specs on the belts. they handle more than it appears.

Just a note: you can cut looped belts to create an open belt. I am currently in the midst of building a belt drive system myself. My understanding is that the belts stretch and rebound only at very high accelerations. Keep your acceleration down, and you can still rapid at high speeds (300 ipm+).

Except that in most cases, faster acceleration is preferable to faster rapids.

Personal opinion stay away from belts, i have a home built router that will cut 1250 x 3000mm being driven by 2 10mm pitch 35mm wide timing belts on the 3000mm axis and i have a major problem with belt deflection. ie left or right cutting one belt has all the tension, when the cutter is in the middle the load is half on each belt so the tension relaxes on each belt. This cause the machine to cut a curve across the material cutting 16mm melamite at 5mtrs per minute.

Check out a build log here by a user name "planekrazie". He built an awesome belt drive cnc and incorporated gear reduction and the whole shebang. Looked impressive and could do 1000 IPM rapids.
