Your new machine is big brother of my little mill

In Turkish when someone buy something new, we say "Gule Gule Kullan" means "use with smile"

!! The company I buy my machinery from has the exact same Mill as yours it's called a RF 45 here.

I had a close look at it when I was picking up the big one and they're a nice Mill with the dovetail column!

I have another Mill a little smaller than my new (see pic below) one that I had intended to retrofit with the CNC gear but once I had all of my parts together I decided to get a bigger/better machine and start fresh.

I'll keep the other Mill as my manual machine as I've fitted a DRO to it and it's a great machine to use for quick jobs.(I'll also use it to make all of the parts for the Big machine)

The new machine is 1000 Kg's so took a bit of effort to get into the workshop on my own, I had to get rid of my old old universal Mill to make room and it weighed 1300 Kg's

I also have a centre lathe I bought from the same company back in 1987 (pic below) that I fitted with a DRO and for a Taiwan built machine it's been brilliant!

OPTIMUM BF 20 Vario - conversion to CNC?

    Hi,
I have a "OPTIMUM BF 20 Vario" and would like to convert it to CNC.
I know nothing about this conversion, besides the very general knowledge about the subject.
Does anybody now how to convert this milling machine to CNC?
As an hobbyist I am very satisfied so far with this small machine!
    Many thanks in advance

    Hi Baileybots,
Thanks for replying. I found the CNC "PC controls an adapter kit" in the Optimum new catalogue.
My point is whether this conversion will enable to continue the manual operation - it seems to me that it is not possible any longer after conversion!
Are you converting using their kit, or are you following another solution?

    Hi Afmelo,

I did not use the optimum set. I wanted a direct drive solution, because I did not like the belt drive system that Optimum offers.

Besides the beltdrive, with lots of free movement, there software is not realy "up to date", see the free trail versions for your self.

As far as I can see there is a problem with manual controle on the y-axis. On the Optimum based conversion kit.

But if you convert your machine to cnc there is no real need for manual control. A other problem is that manual control will damage your steppermotor divers, because your steppermotors will make curent, if you rotate them, like a dynamo.

I have manual controle on my machine, for adjusting the machine, so it runs smooth.

I do not know what you are planning on doing, but the 2.1Nm setup form Optimum is a bit underpowerd for serious cutting. I use 4,5Nm for the x,y/axes an 12Nm for the z/axis.

    Best

I must contact my optimum dealer for my problem. Maybe You have solution for it before I call him. Simply I can`t turn optimum bf20 on. Is there any safety switch inside the mashine.
    Thank you for any answer.

Does the speed adjustment knob click when you turn it all the way to the slowest speed (anti/counter clockwise)?

    If it does, try this:

Switch to either L or R on the direction switch.

Press the green button under the emergency stop cover.

Move the speed switch from the 'off' (lowest speed) position.

At this point the mill should start.

If there are any guards with position switches fitted, make sure they are in the closed position.
