live tooling, c-axis.. lathe or mill

    Hi...

I need some help differentiating between a live tooling lathe or a mill with a c-axis...

my company is going to be producing some helix like parts, made of polyurethane, possibly peek and possibly stainless later...

I'm looking to save some cost so it will be a conversion job of a manual machine...

Anyhoo... I guess my main concern is if its ok to attach live tooling onto a manual lathe... if it might damage the tool holder.... etc etc...

I know my question is rather vague... hoping someone has some experience with this...

My other choice would be a mill with a c axis... however there's a few things i could do with the lathe like boring etc that would be handy...

    Thanks...

    Michael

How are you going to position the spindle?? What you are saying doesn't make any sense to me. a axis rotates around x, b axis rotates around y, c axis rotates around z. so what is the point of rotating around z on a mill unless you have some crazy cutters??? c axis rotates around c/l of z with movement in x to simplify milling on a lathe. any other use is unbeknown to me, unless you have multiple spindles???

    hi...

right... a-axis is around the x... thats what i meant, around the spindle

some of the cam programs I've used state that the c-axis is around x, others call it a...

Anyhoo... Im curious about the stability of the toolpost when used with live tooling, on a typical lathe... something with at least 18" of travel

    thx,
    Michael
