Acrylic vs. SAN for mill enclosure

    Hi,

I'm going to build an enclosure for my mill.

The window materials available localy are Acrylic (Plexiglas) and SAN (styrene acrylonitrile).

Does anyone know which of these materials are likely to last longer in this application? I'm a bit worried about how long they will remain clear and structurally sound when sprayed with coolant and chips.

It's going to depend in part on exactly what coolant you use....

I use Koolmist 77 in a fog-less mist cooler. I'm also considering using the same coolant for flood cooling.

KoolMist and acrylic are fine. But, you should know, KoolMist is lousy for flood unless all you're doing is very light milling. It is strictly a coolant, and provides NO lubricity, so it is worse than useless for more difficult operations that require lubrication, like drilling.

Acrylic has glass-like properties, including poor impact resistance. You might want to look into polycarbonate as an option. If you're in the US getting it delivered is easy.

Polycarbonate (lexan) is the only material I would consider for a machine.
