    Can't internally tap hard bolt

I have a few bolts that require 9/16-18 3B internal threads. I decided to try threading on the TL-1 lathe but something is not quite right.

Drilled bolts with 33/64 bit. I input the data such as minor diameter of .506 and major of .5625. After performing the thread function the threads will not accept a 9/16-18 bolt. I ran a hand tap through them and it was pretty tough being the bolts are so hard.

I have no idea what could be wrong. The thread insert is a dedicated insert for cutting 18 TPI.

I'm thinking maybe I did not set the "X" deep enough into the material. As soon as the insert touched the stock the X diameter measure was set.

Really appreciate any input with this!

adjust your wear to a positive number till you get a desired result.

Thanks djr76. I will do that. I have another question.

I've programmed the ID threading for these bolts with M30 at the end. If I understand correctly, M30 will return to the starting position. So, if I adjust the wear to a positive number and run the program again will the thread insert engage the threads properly to cut out whatever positive number entered in the wear box?

    Thanks,

    AJ

As long as you dont remove the part, it will infinitely start at same position programmed.
