Will a Cat 40 holder spin without a key?

Some idiot sheared off the spindle key in a Cat 40 spindle (he drove an empty spindle into block of aluminum). And I was wondering if the key is there to prevent the holder from spinning as well as for indexing. Is it safe to use the machine without the key (no tool changes of course)?

I would not even try. The taper is much too steep to get much wedging action and the drawbar does not hold with very much force. If you try and the holder moves you stand a very good chance of damaging your spindle taper.

Don’t worry I won’t try it, I was just curious about its function. I pulled another key out of an older machine and noticed it showed some wear. I guess I’ll make two new ones. Anybody know what kind of material these are made of? They obviously are not very hard but tough. I was thinking A2 or D2 tool steel.

    Anything will work.
Personally I would make out of 4140 HT or P20.
Tool steel is OK but don't harden it.
