Cool Optimum BF46 CNC conversion with Kflop and Teknic servos.

Hi All, Just wanted to share, I just completed CNC build for BF46 heavy duty CNC machine. I was amazed by the precision/performance of Teknic servos.
Machine works quiet while working on different kinds of operations. Build a very compact CNC motion controller based on Dynomotion Kflop in Mini-ITX computer cabinet.
I will post pictures soon and try to include some videos.

Looking forward to seeing your pics, I have been thinking about buying an Optimum BF46 for a while now and doing a conversion

Nice work!! Did you put ballscrews in or used the original screws? Those brushless servos are nice, what continuous torque? I had to use 4:1 pulleys on my servo driven X3 mill. Yours seem to run just fine direct drive.

Hi , I used ballscrews SFU25-5 . Teknic brushless servos are SDSK3441 for Z and SDSK3421 for X and Y axis. These motors are directly connected to ball screws. Also X3 mill is way smaller than this mill. This is 1100LB heavy duty precision milling machine.

    Hi Harish,

I'm working towards a CNC conversion on a BF46 too, and have a few questions for you.
-Which rated speed of each servo did you buy? Assuming the YouTube video is of max rapids, I'm guessing 730 rpm on Z and 1090 rpm on X and Y.
-Did you put a brake on the Z axis? If not, do you have any problems with Z falling down when the servo isn't powered up?
-What did you use for bearings in your screw mounts? Did you re-use the Optimum bearings, like they do in their own ballscrew kit?

    Thanks!
    -Steve

    Hello Windscreen,
My youtube video is showing ~90IPM. I will post another video with max IPM ~145 I can achieve using these servos. yes servos are 730 for Z axis and 1090 RPMs for X and Y.
I didn't use any brakes, never had any issue Z axis falling down whether servo is on or off.
I used original bearings from Optimum, I believe those are AC bearings.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

Your brushless motors have more continuous torque than my brushed motors I used but also your machine has much more mass to move.

Most of the time servo motors are geared down for more torque. At first I ran my servo motors direct drive. They had no problems rapid moving the table around but at high cutting loads (steel), they started to get hot. I fixed the problem by using pulleys, trading Rpm for more torque. Now the motors don't get even warm to the touch.

Those teknic servos are high performance so you probably won't have a problem like I did.
