I needed to find a utility to unfold 3D models onto flat plate for CNC plasma and laser cutting. The output had to be .dwg 2D. After checking the Internet for software utilities (some were quite expensive), I decided to try using Rhino 5 to solve the problem.
Pascal Golay, Rhino tech support, is the real author of this tutorial. I simply took his instructions and wrote them down so that the other engineers in my group could learn how to do everything in 5 easy steps.
This tutorial shows how to build typical steel channels in 3D and then flatten them to produce cut files. It takes into account the added material required when folding steel or aluminum with a brake. It should work with multiple axes curved models .... I haven't had time to investigate the full potential of the commands used. Use it freely, send copies to your friends ..... make your life easier!
