I would recommend to use RS232-to-Ethernet converters like MOXA Nport 5110 instead of RS232-to-USB cables. These converters (rs232-ethernet) work much stable than rs232-usb.
Thank you very much for your help. I will certainly check into that converter. Given that a few of the machines are circa 1990, I'm not very sure of what would work best.
