    High voltage and water lines

    Hey all,

I have built CNC machines before but this is my first laser build.

The question I have is about safeties built into the laser power supply. I read where most/many laser power supplies have open circuit and over current protection. So will that save the system from a water line rupture where the coolant hits the connections? I'm an electrical engineer and there is just something about high voltage next to a water line that gives me nightmares.

I've been reading about these systems for a long time and have never seen a conversation about what happens when a water line comes loose or ruptures.

Anybody been there and done that?

    Thanks
    Jeff

Yes and yes, with 1000watt system no less. With di water, not a big deal, dry everything out and go. Now when the building water ruptured inside the cabinet, laser never worked again. Keep everything grounded and in a good cabinet.

OK I appreciate the feedback. Yes I have learned to appreciate good grounding.

Re: High voltage and water lines

I'm using a PC coolant pump on my unit. With a 1.5gpm flow switch. Water pushes a plunger up which is a reed switch held by a spring. I had great flow from that pump but no pressure. I had to remove the spring to get the circuit to work. So these pumps just like inside of a PC don't have enough power to blow anything. If a line ruptured , the switch would kill the power to the tube.
