    Skimpy Oil Skimmers

Anyone have experience using the Skimpy 6" skimmer?
I'm considering mounting one on top of the Tormach coolant tank. There is aprox 6" clearance between the top of the tank and the bottom of the coolant collection tray. The skimmer is only about 3"high.

Your experience and thoughts are welcome.

We had a couple of those skimpy skimmers, we wore them out pretty quick. Replaced all with the Wayne mini skimmers and seem to be lasting longer. Mind you, we run them 10 hours per day though.

I've had one for just over a year, great addition to the Tormach. Thumbs up on this product.

I have a 9 inch Skimpy Oil Skimmer. I added it about a month ago. So far, so good. It's on a timer and it comes on at 2:00 AM and runs till 7:00 AM. It drains into a 3 pound coffee can.

Yeah, I just ordered the 6” model. I only measure about 8” height on the tank so I didn't think the 9” model would be a good fit.

The literature says the belt only needs touch the coolant surface so you only need enough length to cover your level fluctuations.

I'm planning to put both the skimmer & aerator on a timer.

    Can't beat the price...

Which model do you use? I have one that looks similar, might be made by Abanaki, but it left an awful lot of tramp oil in the coolant and picked up a lot of coolant with whatever tramp oil it did remove. Kind of the reverse of what I expected.

The 6" belt unit, it's seems to do a good job. I run it on a timed outlet so it runs a couple hours a day.

Thanks - did you go with the 3/4-in or 1.2-in belt width? Polyurethane/Kevlar belt or the cotton/silicone belt? I have a feeling the belt on my skimmer was most of the problem but don't know what it was made from.

Got my Skimpy installed and works. I will have it on a timer to run at night then when it turns off an air pump will turn on and run to aerate the coolant.

OK, got my Skimpy installed …

    Attachment 271286

They provide a nice length of tubing for the install.
I decided to run it out the back into a 1 gal milk jug.
Used a knock-out punch to make a 1 3/8” hole in the rear.
    Eventually I'll install a rubber grommet (1 3/8” X 1” X 3/32”) in there.
Made a 2” hole into the top of the coolant tank for mounting.
    I used 2 ea 10-24 X 3/4” screws for mounting.
There was enough meat in the lid to tap it for the screws so I can pull it easily.

Plugged her in & oil started started flowing right away.
Very quite operation. Can not hear that it's running.
Definitely needs to be on a timer.

I'm pretty happy with the results.
