    Any Clock Works Makers Here

    Howdy,
Just wondering if there are any clock works makers here.

I'm not talking about adding a clock to a battery powered movement, which is what the internet seems to think clock making is about.

I'm asking about cutting gears and mechanisms to power a clock from raw material with a mill?

I have long had this design in my head for a large homemade clock built from scratch. Just wondering if anyone else has done it with a mill?

    Thank you for your replies.

There have been a few multi-issue articles in Digital Machinist about making clocks from scratch by Wes Bye. Google should turn up several hits for his projects. He hangs out at the at the Home Shop Machinist forum, which is operated by Village Press, the publisher of Digital Machinist. He usually attends the Model Engineering Show in Detroit and the next show is April 18 & 19 this year.

I'm making 8 Day Longcase Clock movements with my lathe and mill. I have an old Carroll Dividing head for cutting the gears and pinions. Since I've CNC'd my mill, it's made making some of the part easier and quicker but there is still al lot of manual work. The nawcc.org site has a lot of information and experienced clock maker/repair experts.

    Best Regards.

Yes I have designed and built 4 long case clocks for my 4 grand children. Each is uniquely different. Here is one of them:

Amazing clock. Thanks for all the responses. There is a all metal, gravity powered wall clock in my future... at some point.

    Well done!
I have the movements for 2 mostly finished and held up because I was not happy with the final face, hand and overall finished look and design.
Then as normal I become sidetracked on other projects. Looking at these inspires me to finish the design and cam up the last parts. get-r-done

    Wow,
I had no idea how this thread would go, but I am impressed with the work.

Where did y'all learn about clock making? Are there any good reference materials?

The books by W.R. Smith seems to be highly regarded:
