Unhappy Check Carriage Sensor or VC Motor

I am another newbie, but fairly computer literate. I have recently acquired this computer, printer, and plotter along with the LXI signmaking software. Tech support is only available for big $$$ so I am begging for help.

I can open the software, create a sign, and send to the plotter. Then it gives me the message ERROR: CHECK CARRIAGE SENSOR OR VC MOTOR.

As I watch the plotter attempt to begin, it measures, and then when it starts to try to print it stops and gives this error message. It seems that the cutting head does not go down into the vinyl. Does it lower on its own, or should it sit a milli(whatever) above the surface and then something pushes the blade down. It sits rather loosely in its holder.

As I am sure you experts can tell I am rather puzzled. Someone PLEASE tell me if I have a hardware problem (a broken machine), or something is not set up right.

    I am at your mercy!!!

What kind of plotter/printer is it. Is it a combo printer- cutter or just a vinyl (knife) cutter?
