    Anyone Need a Butt-load of 6061-T6?

A fried of mine lost his 7-year battle with liver cancer about two months ago. I've been helping his poor widow, who knows nothing about any of the stuff he left behind, deal with cleaning out his bloody enormous shop (probably 75 fee x 100 feet), which is filled to the rafters with metalworking machines (4 CNC mills, all but one lovely Mori-Seiki are quite old, one old Matsuura weighing in at 8000 pounds(!), a beautful Miyano CNC lathe, a really nice Emco12 manual lathe, and an old Clausing 11 in very nice condition), old Jaguar cars (5 in various states of dis-repair) and parts (including 12! engines - 6 inline sixes and six V-12s), and a mind-boggling amount of other "stuff". Among the "other stuff" is a pile of 6061 cut-offs that she was about to send to the scrap yard which would pay her pennies of the dollar. I bought a number of pieces (I snagged 10 pcs 18" x 18" x 1" and a few others). What she has left is about 30 pieces of 6061-T6 plate, cut to 9" x 11.5" x 1-3/8", I figure retail on them would be about $150 each, but she will sell them for much less than that. I would truly hate to see them go to a scrapyard, but I can't justify buying any more myself. Anyone have a use for them? It's all new, good-quality material, nicely saw-cut to the given dimensions.

    Regards,
    Ray L.

Sorry about your friend. Interested in the plate, where are you located?

The material is in San Leandro, CA, just South of San Francisco. But it can be shipped. Two pieces will fit in a USPS Flat Rate box for about $11 to anywhere in the US.

What's the asking price? I'm sure I can find a use for a couple of pieces eventually to help out.

Just got a response from her. She's asking $70 plus shipping ($11 for one or two pieces, via USPS Flat Rate, to anywhere in the US). At OnlineMetals.com, if they carried that size, it would be about $125/piece.

Did a weight calculation based on the dimensions/ one piece = 11 pounds, so 22 pounds for $70 = $3.18 per pound. Pretty decent price.

I'll take a package of 2. Send me a PM with payment info.

How do you guys cut stuff that big? It would fit in my big bandsaw. Just take some time.

I think you mis-read.... $70 for one piece, 9" x 11.5" x 1-3/8" = ~14 pounds. Like I said, price from Online Metals or Speedy would be about $125 for that same piece, NOT including shipping.

Sorry, i was barely in at 2 pc for $70. Scraps are much cheaper on eBay. That is where I get most of my crop ends.

Seems too high to me based on what eBay sellers are asking for 6061. I pass.

I looked on E-Bay but didn't see anything in near this size for less. I see small pieces for cheap, but nothing this large. Can you show me an example? If the price is wrong, I can probably get it reduced.

142 cubic inches @ $70 is 49 cents a cubic inch. There are lots of eBay sellers at 35 cents and less, and you'd get to pick the sizes you want. Price them at 25 cents, which is the 2 for $70 and you might get rid of some of them here. Otherwise put them on eBay yourself and hope for buyers. It's an awkward size which I, and some others, would likely saw into more useable pieces. Personally I'd price them at $50 for two and get rid of them, as she has other things to worry about.

A drop from Yard Metals that is close to the same size here is a bit over $35.00

Ray - McMaster sells 6061, 12"x12"x1-1/2" for $115 and they are not usually considered a low cost metal supplier. On a volume basis, that's about the same as the price you listed. Nice of you to help her out, not many would.

    Mike,

Thanks. Her husband was one of those rare people that would always be there to help a friend, or even a complete stranger. A group of us (fellow Jag-lovers) have been helping her deal with the shop, as he helped all of us out so many times over the years. He really was a wonderful person, who is sorely missed by many.

    Regards,
    Ray L.

Yes, but we're selling all the machines as a lot.

The Miyano is a real beauty - in like-new condition, with about a million tool holders, collets, and a large rack full of all kinds of accessories.

Might want to contact pat Ryan, Ryan machine tools. He's a pretty straight forward used broker.
