I know that wired correctly, the G540 is able to control the speed, but is it able to power the VFD on/off as well?

Bob I'm not an expert at this since I have a post on getting my VFD working.
But if you mean to disconnect/connect the power, like when you done using it but don't want to pull the plug out of the wall type thing, I think a relay or contactor off one of the OUTPUT terminals should do it.
Well that's the only way I can see to do it. Hope someone can help you.
I think he means will the g540 control the vfd's forward/off terminals.
It will, you will have to use one of the g540 outputs wired according to the g540 and vfd manuals.
If your vfd supports it, it is much easier to use rs-485 communication to control on/off and speed.
