NEW BUILD - COMPACT STAND AND HIGH ACCESS ENCLOSURE

    Hi All.

Attached videos of my new build - A compact stand and high access enclosure.

It was posted a few days ago but was removed because of concerns it was a new product promotion. This was probably in part because of my wording. I did have it in mind that perhaps one day the stand and enclosure could be manufactured for sale, but really this is unlikely as in New Zealand labour rates are high and freight would kill the idea.

Really the build is for our in house use. I am interested in your feedback. Already from the first post feedback from you resulted in an improvement. Also if you like the idea you may want to build something similar.

I like the door concept very much. Thanks for sharing.

Question: What is the clear material used for the enclosure?

Question: What keeps coolant from leaking between the door and edge of the enclosure?

    Thank you,

    kr

    Thanks KR

The clear material is PC but it could also be cheaper Acrylic.

Re your other question - bottom edge or sides?

It looks like the sides would be the most difficult. How do you seal the sides of the door?

    Thank you,

    KR

Hi KR. The sides have a 'step' shape that blocks any flow and keeps the coolant in, and the bottom edge has an overlapping lip. So far, this all works 100%.

Very nicely designed and built enclosure, I'd imagine if you could produce them reasonably priced you'd have no trouble selling them, although the labour costs as you mentioend are what keeps a lot of things unobtanium.

    cheers, Ian
It's rumoured that everytime someone buys a TB6560 based board, an engineer cries!

    Keen,
Are the steps rubber of some sort? When the door lifts the bottom comes toward the operator and the top goes into the enclosure. I do not see how that can be done with a metal step.

    Thank you,

    Hi KR.

Perhaps 'steps' is the wrong word. The door and frame vertical edges step in about 1" and this blocks the gap from the coolant flow direction, which is on an angle.

    Thanks Ian

I would like to use a standard Tormach sliding door enclosure and my design side by side and see just how important the higher side and head height access really is. I was considering different designs and access seemed to me a limitation on a small CNC - but I may be overblowing the issue? I know from my number one enclosure which just has table guards, that cleaning access is important.

I was hoping to get feedback from users with standard enclosures if this is issue.

    Keen,
I think I have a bead on it now. The door sits inside the enclosure a bit so the coolant would have to do a tight turn to get out, since the door is so wide.

    Thank you,

Thanks - I don't have the PDB so I cannot confirm that.

(I often put big tools straight into the R8 for max rigidity doing heavy tool steel milling ...so I cant see how a PDB or tool changer would really work for me.)

I don't think ATC is an issue - and PDB is probably only minor adjustments. But I agree the product would need more R and D with a PDB and ATC machine and a production design developed, before sales could even be considered.

At this stage I am just airing the general idea to see what the level of interest and issues might be. Thanks for your input.

As I mentioned at the start, manufacturing ex NZ would be too expensive.
