    Looking at a 1991 VF1 possible purchase

Found a old 1991 VF1 locally ,its not in bad shape but does have a Com board problem
But the machine works. Just have to enter the programming manually

This will be my first CNC machine, after many attempts over the years.

I was looking at getting a Tormach with all the bells and whistles, came to $14k
I can get the HAAS for less than 1/2 , but with the problems.

Should I go for it and get the HAAS or just keep looking... I do know there is a big difference between the two machines...

I could always retrofit it with a new PC controller if the repairs end up exceeding what it would be worth.

    Thanks for any input.

? Why not buy the com board from haas and have them install it ?
Less than 1000$ installed, I would have thought

I like the Haas fast machine and tech support is great. Just my 2 cents

Thought about it, but it does not have Rigid Tap and the serial number is so old that it is not in the data base with Haas service. My first Haas was a new 1991 VF-1 and its serial number was about 1530, this one is 1012 or something. It is very old.

You must have communications to use one of these machines. Entering code by hand is something I do all of the time, but not for longer major programs. It would not work for that.

The machine is on East coast of Fl and service on the West coast, service trips would be costly. If you don't know how to repair these machines yourself, I would avoid it. And I would never try to convert to some PC based system.

Update, I guess he has revised the listing on eBay and it now says it has no doors! Believe me, you don't just make new ones.
