    Machine stops mid run

    Hello All,

I'm new to this so this may be a simple problem.

Here's the setup. I'm running a K2CNC 3925HD machine with kmotion/kmotioncnc software. I'm currently using vcarve to draw designs.

From vcarve there are no obvious post processors to use. K2CNC doesn't seem to work. I found that EMC2 seems to work. I can draw basic shapes, mainly squares and circles with no problem. However, when it comes to more complex curves, the machine simply stops.

No error message, but based on the simplicity of the software, I don't know if I should expect one.

Here's what I have observed. In the kmotionCNC g viewer, the design (when simple) is mapped out in advance and the machine functions fine. However, when I create a design that has a somewhat unpredictable path, the g viewer will plot out the design up to the point that the machine will stop. Basically the g viewer seems to know in advance that it won't make it past a point.

I suspect there is a computational problem or some sort of limits that stop the program from computing any further. I have increased the look-ahead time and slowed the feed in the hopes that it's a computing to time available thing, but it seems as though the stoppage is not alleviated by extra time.

    When things work:
straight lines that have fairly sharp angles
    perfect circles
    curved splines

    When things don't work:
    outlined type
    ellipses
    free form shapes

    any help would be appreciated.

    thanks
    nate

    Hi Nate,

Can you post a small fragment of G Code that demonstrates the problem?

Also post your KMotionCNC | Tool Setup | Trajectory Planner Settings.

Also the Version of KMotionCNC you are using (right click title bar | About).

    Hi natev,

I think there was an related issue in that test Version. Please try upgrading to the latest Test Version 4.31q:

    http://dynomotion.com/Software/KMotion431q.exe

After installation copy the data directory from the prior version to the new installation to copy over most of your settings.

You will also need to Flash the new Version into FLOP with KMotion.exe | Config/Flash | New Version.

    Thanks for the help.

Where is data directory? I assume this is a folder with the saved settings?

It is in the installed directory under the KMotion directory.

    Is this it?

Also, I purchased this machine with the motors, etc. already set up. Is doing this something that could potentially cause me even more problems? I'm totally unfamiliar with how to re-setup a machine like this. I figure I'll have to learn it sometime, but I don't know how much physical damage I can cause to the machine by resetting things. I've been looking through dynomotions help manuals and there are definitely parts that I don't understand.

    Hi Nate,

Yes. I'm not familiar with your machine but there is definitely risk even if you know what you are doing

If you post the Gcode (not just a picture) we can run it with that Version to see if it halts unexpectedly.

    Hi Nate,

Welcome back. I don't see anything specifically wrong with the GCode you posted.

Like we said before we I think the first step would be to upgrade the software which involves risk. Have you decided to take on that risk yourself?

    Re: Machine stops mid run

Before I move forward with loading a new version I'd like to understand what will be required to at least get back to my current state. Current state being at least new version and same problems.

After flashing the new version onto my control box, I will overwrite the "data" folder. Is this all? You said "most of your settings" what will be lost? What settings are non-recoverable? Also, Should I save that "data" folder separately or will the new data folder be saved in a new directory leaving the old intact?

If updating is not the issue, will this update cause any additional problems?

    Thanks for your help.

    Re: Machine stops mid run

    Hi Nate,

You should have a complete back up of your PC.

By default our Installations install to a unique directory and should leave the previous Version intact. However I don't know if K2CNC made any changes or organized things in their own way. To be sure you should ask them and get them involved. But I wouldn't think installing a new version would have an effect on a previous version. It wouldn't hurt to have a hard copy printout of all the configuration screens (KMotionCNC Tool Setup Tabs).

To use the new Version you will need to Flash a New Version of Firmware into KFLOP. To revert back to the previous Version you would need to re-flash the old Version. IF K2CNC Flashed any special configuration into KFLOP that would be lost and you would need K2CNC to restore it. We don't recommend Flashing special configurations into KFLOP for exactly this reason. We don't have a means of backing up the internal contents of KFLOP. You could always use a separate KFLOP to leave the original intact.

Copying the Data directory from the previous Version to the New Version should set parameters existing in the previous Version to the same values in your New Version. Any new parameters should default to reasonable values for most systems but every system is different.

When upgrading to any new version with many fixes and new features there is always a risk that something is broken that wasn't before. Our latest Released Version 4.31 has not had any problems reported.
