THis will be interesting to see. The MT-4 spindle is a real advatage. If you think about it, there are a lot of parts in a manual lathe (change gears, tumbler reverse) etc which can be replaced by a simple stepper, mount and coupler....

I wonder what software they ripped?

Really nice little lathe I like the chip guard.

    Do you know the price?

I wouldn't mind betting that ball screws were not used.

I haven't seen the price point yet but I'll bet that they weren't used either. There seem to be more options every day.

How would I get my big fat hands in there to clean it?
There does'nt look like much space between the bottom of the machine and the chip pan!

It looks like a traditional 4 position tool post, is it auto-indexing, or do you move manually?

Intriguing little machine. And yes, it sure looks like an 8x18. There are a couple of nice upgrades in there, such as a camlock on the tailstock instead of just tightening a screw. I find it intriguing that the cross-slide servo/stepper drive looks like a right angle drive. Not sure what the backlash implications of that would be!

I do believe the 9x30 and shorter bed 8x18 variant are the best CNC platforms among the mini-lathes. They are more heavily made than the 9x20's (they don't require the compound modification for rigidity), and the dispense with things like quick change gears out of the box.

Widgit, there is more room than you'd think to get under the bed as it sits on two pedestals at the ends. The middle is hidden by the chip guard and apron, but I'll bet that guard flips up somehow. The travelling guard design would be nifty for anyone with one of these lathes. The controller also looks nicely integrated on the front.

Somehow the chuck looks small to me. The spec says 100mm, which is just under 4". Also, not clear how productive a CNC machine like this would be commercially with some form of bar feeder. It would be perfectly adequate for prototyping, however.

    Best,

    BW

That's almost a 1inch spindle bore. Looks cool. What is the price and where do people buy them. That link isn't working for me.

    Question Chinese Mini Lathe

Looks pretty good. But what type of control is that? Doesn't say if it has RS232 or USB interface. Beats the hell out of doing a lot of manual operations.
I wonder if it has an optional programmable tail stock? You might be able to put a quick change tool post in it too.

The Ad says it has a .0004 spindle accuracy.

Interesting but what I'd like to see in a lathe this size is a spindle bored for 5C collets. It looks like they are real close dimension wise so this is a frustration.

The other thing that bothers me is that a slant bed or somehting similar is needed to keep the swarf off the mechanics.

I purchased the lathemaster 9 x 30 and was going to convert it to CNC. Have not even received the lathe and am already considering selling it and being a guinea pig on this machine.

    jorge,

That 9 X30 would be an excellent lathe to cnc, good and rigid.

Yeah ... I will probably stick with the original plan, it seems to fit my needs perfectly
