Do EMC or Mach3 require spindle encoder feedback to thread?

    Hi all,

I am just curious as I am planning my cnc retro fit of my harbor freight lathe. Do the major cnc softwares like EMC, Mach 3 etc.. require spindle encoder feedback and a VFD do to a threading operation or can it thread without feedback?

    Thanks!

For threading you need a spindle encoder. You don't need a VFD though.

    Mach3 needs a 1 pulse/rev sensor.

Both can thread with only an index pulse. I've seen good and bad results posted on these forums, most report good results.
Linuxcnc (emc) can thread with an encoder using software or external hardware. Mach3 can do this with external hardware.
Anyone who says "It only goes together one way" has no imagination.

From what I've read, if using the3 parallel port and Mach3, threading results can vary quite a bit from PC to PC. A motion controller that supports threading in Mach3 should give much more consistent results.
