Could you be a little more specific... Which machine/model/controller?

iirc, our Fanuc-controlled mills could do a Z-straight-up change anywhere on the table, but the older Fadal-controlled machines had to go to the reference points first.

I have a Fadal VMC 15-XT. The control is a 88HS. The machine always moves to same position to do a tool change and I would like to know if and how I can make it move to a position I choose to do the tool change. I appreciate your help. Thanks

I use format 2, and my 88hs machine ('98 3016L) will tool change at the current table location -- it just goes up in Z and swaps tools.

Are you still needing an answer to this question? Or did you figure it out? I run 2 operations on the table at once with 9" tall parts, and 8" long tools on a Fadal 4020 with 20" Z travel and am programing in format 2. If you need, I'll send a sample of my program so you can see what I'm doing.
